A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials on B. lactis HN019 specifically found it was efficacious in increasing markers of white blood cell (your soldiers) activity, with researchers proposing that probiotic bacteria interact with pattern-recognition receptors on immune cells in the gut lining, directly supporting their function. 

Butyrate (the short chain fatty acid (SCFA) produced when beneficial bacteria ferment fibre) is another well-studied player here.
