Inositol for PCOS: Why more women are taking it and what the research says

If you have PCOS, you may have come across Inositol in your search for ways to better support your symptoms.

Inositol has become popular among women experiencing irregular cycles, insulin resistance and other challenges associated with PCOS. So what exactly is it, and why is it receiving so much attention?

The answer largely comes down to the connection between PCOS, insulin, and the way cells communicate in the body. 

Let's start from the start: a quick overview of PCOS.

PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) is a hormonal and metabolic condition that can affect the ovaries or menstrual cycle, among other things.

In May 2026, PCOS was actually renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS, to better represent the broader endocrine, metabolic and reproductive features of the condition. The transition to the new name will take time, so many people will continue to recognise it as PCOS.[1]

While every woman’s experience is different, some common symptoms of PCOS can include:

↳ Irregular or absent periods
↳ Higher androgen levels
Acne or changes in hair growth
Difficulty ovulating
Insulin resistance
Changes in metabolic health

These symptoms may appear to be unrelated, but they are influenced by the way that hormones and metabolic signals interact within the body. This is where inositol becomes relevant.

What is inositol?

Inositol is a compound naturally produced by our bodies and also found in foods such as fruit, beans, nuts and whole grains. 

It plays a significant role in cellular communication, including the signals that help the body respond to insulin. It is also involved in processes within the ovaries that contribute to normal reproductive function.

Extra tidbit: Inositol is sometimes referred to as vitamin B8, but it is not technically a vitamin because the body can produce it on its own. Supplementation is still being studied in PCOS because inositol is involved in insulin signalling, and providing additional inositol may support pathways that do not function as effectively in some women with the condition.[2,3]

The connection between PCOS and insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose from the bloodstream into cells, where it can be used for energy. When cells do not respond to insulin as effectively as they should, the body may produce more insulin to compensate. This is known as insulin resistance, and it is common among women with PCOS.[2]

Higher insulin levels may also influence ovulation and hormone signalling in PCOS.

Higher insulin levels can also influence ovarian androgen production, which can contribute to disrupted ovulation, irregular menstrual cycles and some of the other symptoms you might experience with PCOS.[2]

Importantly, insulin resistance is not limited to women in larger bodies. It can affect women with PCOS across a range of body sizes and builds.[2]

Where does inositol fit?

Inositol is involved in the signalling pathways that help insulin communicate with cells. This has led researchers to investigate whether supplementation may support insulin sensitivity and some of the metabolic and reproductive processes affected by PCOS.

Studies have explored inositol’s potential effects on areas including:

↳ Menstrual regularity
Ovulation
Androgen-related markers
Broader metabolic health

Some findings are promising, particularly around insulin-related markers and selected reproductive outcomes. However, it should be viewed realistically: inositol is a nutrient that may support certain pathways involved in PCOS, not necessarily a treatment that will resolve every symptom.[3,4]

Is inositol a treatment for PCOS?

Inositol is not a cure for PCOS, and it will not work in exactly the same way for every woman. It is better considered as one possible part of a broader and individualised approach to PCOS support.[2]

Depending on the person, that approach may also include nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, prescribed medication and support from qualified healthcare professionals.
